India's engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a Dh110 million contract to upgrade and modify the gas gathering facilities at Abu Dhabi's onshore Bu Hasa field, officials confirmed yesterday.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the downstream part of the Bu Hasa field has been awarded by the Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Co (Gasco).

L&T beat stiff competition from several international bidders notably France's Technip, Italy's Snamprogetti, Australia's Clough Engineering and Sharjah-based Petrofac International.

"We have been intimated that we have been selected for the full EPC contract for the Bu Hasa upgrade. The mechanical completion will take 25 months for completion and the project will be duly commissioned in 35 months," a senior official of L&T, told Gulf News. Work on the project began last December 31, the official added.

L&T also won a Dh20 million EPC contract for the sulphur recovery unit (SRU) of Takreer in Abu Dhabi to supply and install a 50-tonne per day SRU at Ruwais.

"The GCC is going to be our prime area for EPC contracts. It has been indentified the target region for international EPC business and we are making efforts to deepen our presence," the official said.

"L&T is active in the Gulf region with several projects on hand currently including the Takreer and Gasco project. We have projects ongoing in Kuwait and Qatar. The Kuwait project is expected to be completed in six months," he said.

The $14 million Kuwait project entails increasing capacity of sulphur recovery units at the Shuaiba refinery at three trains from 270 tonnes per day (tpd) to 400 tpd.

Last August L&T won a Dh62 million subcontract for two towers in the Al Murooj commercial and residential project in Dubai.
