Dubai: Additional capacity is being added to a 3 million tonne liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage facility in Jebel Ali, Dubai to cater to the UAE’s growing energy demands and diversification targets, the UAE Energy Minister said on Wednesday.

“Dubai will announce [it] once they land on the capacity … but definitely it’s an upgrade from the existing 3 million tonnes,” Suhail Mohammad Faraj Al Mazroui, the Energy Minister, told reporters at a ministry event.

It is unclear whether the Minister was speaking about Dubai Supply Authority’s (DUSUP) storage facility within DP World’s Jebel Ali Terminal. The Minister declined to comment on details, including the size of the additional capacity, when it would be completed, and whether it would be onshore or offshore.

Last year, DUSUP, which supplies energy to utility and industrial companies in the emirate, announced it would replace its 3 million tonne LNG Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) with a 4.5 million tonne capacity offshore unit in April 2015, increasing to 6 million tonnes by the end of 2015.

The Minister could not be reached for clarification later on Wednesday.

The UAE, which imports more than 90 per cent of its gas requirements, has a target to generate 24 per cent of energy needs from clean energy by 2021.
