Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET) partners with NVIDIA to establish advanced AI school

Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET) has announced a collaboration with NVIDIA to establish the Thapar School of Advanced AI & Data Science (TSAAI) at TIET's Patiala campus, a media release said. This initiative, supported by the NVIDIA AI University program, aims to bridge the AI expertise gap in India by offering a range of academic programs, research opportunities, and innovation projects, it further added.

Dr. Padmakumar Nair, Director of TIET, highlighted the significance of this partnership, and said, "This collaboration will bridge the gap in AI expertise and pave the way for cutting-edge research and innovation." Vishal Dhupar, Managing Director of Asia South at NVIDIA, added, "The new AI school will help cultivate a new generation of AI experts across India."

According to the media release, TIET will leverage state-of-the-art AI infrastructure, including NVIDIA DGX systems and NVIDIA AI Enterprise software, to support the development and deployment of generative AI. The dedicated data centre will offer 227 petaflops of AI performance with nearly 8 terabytes of GPU memory. Additionally, TIET is setting up an edge computing infrastructure with 500 Jetson Nano developer kits to foster a startup ecosystem.

By the 2024-2025 academic year, TIET will offer a full undergraduate AI degree program, AI courses across all disciplines, technical training for faculty and staff, and research collaborations, the institute said. The curriculum will ensure all graduating students are "AI literate" within 2-4 years. Key projects include the Thapar Digital Twin project and interdisciplinary initiatives in food security, urban planning, healthcare, cybersecurity, and robotics.

According to them, the key highlights of TSAAI:

Academics:

- New undergraduate engineering program in AI (B.E. in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning).

- AI elective courses across all programs.

- Master's Program in AI, ML, and DS for working professionals.

- Professional development courses for industry professionals.

- Nine credits of AI training for all TIET students.

Faculty and Student Training:

- NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute (DLI) Ambassador Program for faculty.

- DLI workshops for students and faculty.

NVIDIA will also extend its Inception program benefits to qualifying TIET-incubated AI startups, said the media release
