Under the patronage and attendance of the President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, the Kuwait Fund participated in the opening ceremony of the Extension of the Mangochi Potable Water Supply Project in Mangochi, the Republic of Malawi on Saturday, October 12, 2023.

Representing the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development at the inauguration was the Director of Operations, Mr. Abdullah Al- Mesaibih, along with a delegation from the Fund. From the Malawian side, Her Excellency the former President of the Republic of Malawi, Joyce Banda, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, officials from Malawi’s water sector, and representatives of civil society in Mangochi participated.

The Kuwait Fund's participation in the project was significant, contributing 79% of the total project cost with a loan granted in 2019, amounting to 5 million Kuwaiti Dinars. Serving approximately 39,000 individuals currently, the project is poised to expand its reach to about 93,000 people by 2036. This expansion aims to satisfy the growing demand for safe drinking water and to bolster public health by establishing a comprehensive water treatment plant and developing extensive networks for water transportation and distribution. Moreover, the project is anticipated to foster commercial growth, thereby enhancing socio-economic conditions and creating more job opportunities.

The project encompasses facilities for extracting raw water from Lake Malawi and a water treatment plant with a purification capacity of 13,500 m³ per day. The infrastructure also includes a post-purification water pumping station capable of processing about 480 m³ per hour, water storage tanks with a capacity of 4,300 m³, and a distribution network. The project integrates the necessary materials for delivering water to consumers, including the installation of prepayment-type meters and consulting services. With this project, the total number of projects undertaken by the Kuwait Fund for Development in the Republic of Malawi totals seven.
