Dubai: International operators of product and chemical tankers Hafnia have partnered with Dubai-based artificial intelligence start-up SteelCorr DMCC to monitor effective paint maintenance on ships.

SteelCorr’s AI-driven app – Digital Paint Report (DPR) - will help the tanker operator monitor corrosion and paint maintenance on vessels at sea. Hafnia said the SteelCorr DPR application will monitor 57 of its ships, enhancing paint maintenance and reporting. The SteelCorr application will monitor corrosion levels onboard, detecting and alerting staff to increased corrosion in specific areas of the ship, improving remote oversight and data security.

SteelCorr has said the DPR app now runs on 200 ships worldwide to help ship owners, managers, and crew save time and money.

Mikkel Boesen, VP Head of the Technically Outsourced Fleet at Hafnia, said, “Digitalization simplifies complex tasks, optimises performance, reduces costs, and maximises resource utilisation. It is great to further Hafnia’s innovation and digitalisation ambitions to drive operational efficiencies.”

The company said, “Clients using DPR also further their ESG goals as more effective maintenance reduces material wastage and helps keep crew stress levels down by automating the reporting process.”

Leroy Dias, Founder and CEO of SteelCorr, said, ‘The SteelCorr team is delighted that our AI-powered app is useful in enhancing the vessel Fabric condition with effective paint maintenance. We cheer Hafnia on their success and will continue to work with the team to improve the DPR app further.”

Effective paint maintenance prevents corrosion and minimises downtime and material replacement. “The use of DPR simplifies and automates reporting processes, reducing crew obligations and added workload,” said Dias.
