Emirates flight 305 from Shanghai marked the 1 millionth air movement on December 22
Abu Dhabi: The UAE surpassed one million air traffic movements in a single year in 2024 – a significant milestone in the UAE’s aviation journey. According to data from the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the sector witnessed an average air traffic growth rate of 10.3 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023. On December 22, 2024, the one-millionth annual air traffic movement was recorded by the GCAA with the arrival of Emirates Flight 305 from Shanghai.
Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE’s Minister of Economy and Chairman of GCAA said, “Achieving the milestone of one million air traffic movements in a single year is not a mere numerical achievement but a reflection of the UAE’s steadfast commitment to developing the aviation sector as a cornerstone of its national economy and solidifying its position as a global air transport destination.”
Al Marri said the country has witnessed over 20 per cent growth in air traffic over the past two years, among the highest globally. He said, “The UAE is well-equipped to handle even greater volumes in the years ahead, supported by advanced infrastructure, skilled workforce, and state-of-the-art technologies.”
The aviation authority said crossing the threshold of one million air traffic movements in a single year reflects the relentless efforts of the GCAA and the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre to deliver exceptional air navigation services that meet the aspirations of global airlines and enhance the air travel experience. The navigation centre, run by the GCAA, is one of the world's busiest air traffic control centres.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of GCAA, added: “This is a result of years of planning, innovation, and close collaboration with our partners in the aviation sector.”
He added, “With an average growth rate of 10.3 per cent in 2024 compared to last year's 2023, we remain committed to continuously enhancing our systems and services to uphold the highest standards of safety and efficiency, reflecting sustainable development and continued success in managing air traffic successfully and professionally.”
In 2024, several technological advancements were installed at the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre, including integrating advanced systems and adopting innovative solutions to improve airspace efficiency and minimize delays.
Additionally, GCAA also enhanced airspace capacity in 2024 to meet increasing demands while ensuring safety and reliability.
According to the Air Transport Action Group, aviation’s total global economic impact (direct, indirect, induced, and tourism-catalytic) is estimated at $4.1 trillion.
In Dubai alone, aviation-facilitated tourism spending is estimated to have contributed Dh43 billion in gross value added, or 8.5 per cent of Dubai’s GDP, supporting 329,000 jobs.
