Dubai: An Etihad flight bound for Indonesia was diverted to an airport in India on Wednesday morning due to a medical emergency.

The airline confirmed to Gulf News that flight EY 474, which left Abu Dhabi for Jakarta at 3am today, had to be diverted to Mumbai.

The carrier did not specify the nature of the emergency, but according to other media reports, an Indonesian passenger had delivered a baby on board.

Passengers aboard the flight were expected to arrive in Indonesia two hours later than scheduled due to the diversion.

“As a result of the diversion, the flight will be two hours delayed arriving into Jakarta. We regret any inconvenience caused,” Etihad said in a statement sent to Gulf News.

“The safety of our guests and crew is Etihad Airways’ highest priority.”

According to an IANS report, the plane made an emergency diversion to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport after a female passenger delivered a baby on board.

The woman was rushed to the Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri east as soon as it arrived in Mumbai.

She is now recuperating with her newborn baby.
