Dubai: Emirates airline resumed flights to Hong Kong on Thursday after cancelling flights heading there over the past two days because of Typhoon Hato.

A spokesperson at Emirates told Gulf News the carrier resumed its flights to Hong Kong, with the Emirates website showing some flights as having arrived there already.

The carrier cancelled flights on August 22 and 23 because of the storm, and said it was monitoring the situation in Hong Kong.

In an earlier statement, Emirates said, “We are monitoring the situation closely, and aim to give customers as much notice as possible if there are any further changes to our operations. Passengers holding tickets to/from Hong Kong are advised to contact their local Emirates office and check the status of their flight [on the Emirates website].”

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airway, which had not cancelled any flights earlier, said flights were still operating to Hong Kong. The only change to the carrier’s scheduled flights to Hong Kong was a delay in a flight on Tuesday.

An Etihad spokesperson told Gulf News earlier there hadn’t been advisories to cancel any flights to Hong Kong. So far, that remains to be the case.

Typhoon Hato, a maximum category 10 storm, has been lashing Hong Kong with wind and rain, forcing most businesses to close, Reuters reported. There were also reports of dozens of injuries, while in the city of Macau, across the Pearl River estuary, deaths were reported, Reuters said.
