Cabin crew and a passenger nurse delivered the healthy baby at 30,000 feet
Mumbai: In an interesting turn of events, an Air India Express flight travelling from Muscat to Mumbai became the unexpected setting for a new beginning today, as a healthy baby was born mid-air.
The dramatic birth was assisted by the airline’s cabin crew and a nurse among the passengers, the airline told Gulf News in a statement.
The flight, en route to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, witnessed a sudden medical emergency when a Thai national passenger went into labour.
According to the airline, the cabin crew immediately sprang into action, applying their rigorous training to create a safe and supportive environment for the impending birth.
As the delivery unfolded in the skies, the flight deck crew promptly alerted Air Traffic Control, requesting priority landing in Mumbai. Upon landing, medical teams and an ambulance, which were on standby, received the mother and newborn.
Upon arrival in Mumbai, both mother and baby were swiftly transferred to a nearby hospital for immediate post-natal care.
An Air India Express staff member accompanied them, the airline said. The names of the parent and the baby were not revealed as the airline requested privacy for the passenger.
Air India Express has confirmed they are in contact with the Consulate General of Thailand in Mumbai to provide further assistance to the new mother, ensuring a smooth onward journey to her home country.
The incident highlighted a remarkable display of seamless coordination, not only between the cockpit and cabin crew but also involving ground staff, medical responders, and airport authorities.
