Bahrain International Airport (BIA) has got a boost with 12 routes added by several operating carriers, bringing the total number of destinations it serves to 53, the facility’s operator announced Saturday.

“These new routes offer travellers a wider range of destinations to choose from and reaffirm BIA’s position as a key aviation hub in the region,” Ayman Zainal, the chief commercial chief of the Bahrain Airport Company said, according to the kingdom’s official news agency BNA.

State carrier Gulf Air has recently introduced eight new routes. “Improvements being made to BIA’s facilities, infrastructure and services as part of the Airport Modernisation Programme have given airlines the confidence to expand their networks out of BIA,” Zainal added.

The official expected that the airport’s annual capacity will reach 14 million passengers after the opening of a new terminal building.
