Digital initiative to boost entrepreneurial growth in the UAE, says Neha Thomas
The Free Zones Authority of Ajman is revolutionising business licensing with a new ‘One Click’ system, designed to make the process faster, more efficient, and more accessible for entrepreneurs. Speaking at the Invest UAE seminar organised by Gulf News at the Amazing Room, V Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, Neha Thomas, Director of Marketing at the Free Zones Authority of Ajman, outlined how the digital initiative aims to simplify business setup and attract foreign investments to the UAE.
“Whether it’s getting a cup of coffee or issuing a trade license, everything can be done with just one click,” Thomas said. She explained that Ajman’s Free Zones Authority is leveraging digital solutions to streamline business setup processes, ensuring speed and simplicity. “We prioritise speed because there are over 50 other free zones and corporate service providers out there. Unless we offer a seamless experience, why would anyone choose us?”
The Free Zones Authority of Ajman oversees three distinct zones — Ajman Free Zone, Ajman Media City, and Al Zorah Free Zone — each catering to a variety of business activities. Thomas noted that these zones provide a range of options along with unmatched convenience, making them attractive destinations for investors and startups.
The authority is also tapping into emerging sectors such as AI, blockchain, and sustainability. “We’re seeing a significant shift towards technology-driven industries,” Thomas said. She mentioned the ‘Blue Visa’ initiative that targets businesses excelling in environmentally friendly practices, emphasising Ajman’s commitment to supporting innovative industries.
Thomas explained the concept of ‘One Click’ licensing, which allows entrepreneurs to obtain trade licenses almost instantly. “If your business setup is straightforward, and you have your passport and business name ready, you can get your trade license issued before your coffee gets cold,” she said. Compliance checks and KYC procedures are completed within 10-15 minutes on the backend, ensuring a swift and efficient process.
This high level of automation and digitization positions Ajman as a competitive player among over 50 free zones in the UAE. “Right from the customer journey — whether someone lands on our website or makes an inquiry — they receive a callback in less than 10 seconds,” Thomas said.
The Free Zones Authority of Ajman is seeing a surge in foreign direct investment, particularly in tech-driven sectors. Thomas attributed this to the authority’s entrepreneur-friendly policies, mentorship programmes, and a comprehensive support system that guides investors through every step of the business setup journey.
“Our team is there to guide each client through the entire journey, ensuring a seamless transition regardless of where they are coming from,” she said, highlighting the authority’s commitment to customer-centric services.
Addressing misconceptions about Ajman’s location, Thomas highlighted its strategic advantage. “People often think Ajman is far away, but it takes the same amount of time to drive from Dubai to Ajman as it does to get to Downtown Dubai,” she said. Ajman is also known for its cost-effective business solutions, offering state-of-the-art facilities at half the price compared to other emirates.
To further increase accessibility, the Free Zones Authority of Ajman is launching a new kiosk at the Dubai World Trade Centre next week, making business setup even more convenient for entrepreneurs.
Discussing the future of business licensing, Thomas was optimistic about the role of technology. “If we can issue licenses in one click today, imagine what the future holds.” she said, envisioning a world where advanced technologies like Neuralink could make business licensing even more seamless.
She ended the session with an inspiring message for aspiring entrepreneurs: “If you have an idea — even if it’s not a groundbreaking one — and you believe in it, just go for it.”
Thomas also encouraged attendees to participate in an ongoing business pitch competition with Big 106.2 FM, where the winner receives a free trade license.
