Mars, Pennsylvania: This hungry Labrador has some unusual taste buds.

A Pennsylvania veterinarian retrieved 62 hair bands, eight pairs of underwear and a bandage from the dog's stomach during exploratory surgery.

The head technician at Good Shepherd's Veterinary Hospital in Mars tells WTAE-TV that the black Lab named Tiki wasn't responding to medicine for vomiting, diarrhea and a loss of appetite, and X-rays showed a mass in its stomach.

Last week's surgery lasted two hours, and the vet and his technician were shocked at the items that were pulled out.

The dog's owner, Sara Weiss, says Tiki once swallowed a plastic foam dart, but that passed through the dog's system naturally.

6-year-old mauled to death by dog

In Raleigh, North Carolina, the Henderson County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday that no charges will be filed in the death of a 6-year-old boy mauled by a pit bull.

police investigation found the 1-year-old male pit bull was adopted from the Asheville Humane Society about three weeks before the attack.

Authorities said the organisation followed adoption procedures and the dog was current on its rabies and other recommended vaccinations.

Joshua Philip Strother apparently had climbed over a 4-foot chain-link fence to get into a neighbour's yard in Hendersonville, N.C. The pit bull was so aggressive that responding officers had to shoot it so emergency workers could get to the child, a sheriff's office spokesman said.

Strother died at the scene from wounds to his head and neck, police said.
