Some accused El Gendy of promoting divorce, while others saw it as compassion
Dubai: Once a day for love and celebration, Valentine’s Day has become a contentious season for some—especially family law attorneys handling divorce, khula (wife-initiated divorce), and alimony cases.
Egyptian lawyer Noha El Gendy sparked debate on social media after announcing a 40 per cent discount on her fees for khula cases in honour of Valentine’s Day.
El Gendy shared the offer on Facebook, wishing her followers a happy Valentine’s Day while promoting the discount. “40% off on khula cases... May God help us do good deeds,” she wrote, framing it as support for women seeking to end troubled marriages.
The announcement quickly divided opinions. While some accused her of encouraging divorce, others defended the move as a compassionate gesture for women facing marital struggles.
In response, El Gendy clarified that this initiative wasn’t new but part of her ongoing efforts to support women in difficult relationships.
In Egypt, Muslim women can file for khula if their marriage is unbearable, provided they forfeit financial rights and return the dowry. The process is legally recognized and handled through the courts.
