US helicopter shot down near Baghdad

Baghdad: A US helicopter has been shot down by insurgents near Baghdad, according to the American military.

The Kiowa attack helicopter was downed by "enemy fire" south of the Iraqi capital on Monday and the pilots escaped with only minor injuries, according to a statement.

It added that the helicopter was then destroyed by laser-guided bombs after the pilots had been rescued.
