A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck northeast of the Egyptian city of Suez on Monday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The shallow quake, which occurred at 0000 GMT, was centred about 41 kilometres (25 miles) north-northeast of Suez. 

An AFP journalist in the capital Cairo felt the tremors. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
