Hamas rejects Israeli denial on blast that killed Islamic Jihad leader

Last updated:

Gaza City: Hamas on Saturday vowed revenge for a blast that killed eight Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and dismissed an Israeli military denial of responsibility for the explosion.

The explosion hit the Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip late on Friday, which also wounded 42 others, including 17 children.

"Israel bears full responsibility and will also suffer the consequences," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhi told reporters.

The radical Islamic Jihad also condemned the attack and said in a statement that Israel "is responsible and all of its denials will change nothing."

Ayman Al Fayed, a senior fighter in Islamic Jihad's armed wing, was killed along with seven others, including two of his children, in the Bureij explosion.

Palestinian medics said the blast was caused by a missile, but the Israeli military denied involvement in the incident.
