UAE stresses safety of diplomats

UAE is watching the development closely over Saudi Arabia's recall of its ambassador from Egypt

Abu Dhabi: Dr Abdul Rahim Yousuf Al Awadi, Assistant Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs, has said that the UAE is watching the development closely over Saudi Arabia's recall of its ambassador from Egypt and the closure of its consulates in Alexandria and Suez.

It also regrets the attempt to target Saudi diplomatic missions in Egypt and to affect the historical relationship between the two countries.

"UAE stresses security and safety of diplomatic workers, missions and diplomats besides the need for strict adherence to all the terms of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, in particular Article 22 and 29," the official said.

Al Awadi added that the protection of diplomatic missions and diplomats is essential for maintaining Arab relations and any unjustified escalation should be contained against the backdrop of developments in the Arab world.
