Cairo: Saudi-led Arab coalition forces, fighting Yemen’s Iran-aligned Al Houthi militia, have destroyed two explosives-laden boats launched by the rebels in the Red Sea, an alliance official said, the latest such a bid in recent weeks.
The remote-controlled unmanned boats were an attempt by Al Houthis to carry out a” hostile and terrorist act” in the southern Red Sea, spokesman for the coalition Turki Al Maliki added.
They were launched from the coastal governorate of Hodeida in western Yemen, he added, according to the Saudi news agency SPA.
Threat to security
“The two explosive boats were destroyed Wednesday evening as they represented a threat to regional and international security, and routes of sea shipping and world trade,” he said.
Al Maliki accused Al Houthis of using Hodeida as a launch pad for firing ballistic missiles, drones, explosive boats and random planting of naval fines in a glaring violation of humanitarian world law and a UN-brokered ceasefire agreement for Hodeida signed in Switzerland in 2018.
Al Houthis plunged Yemen into a devastating conflict after they toppled the internationally recognised government and overran the capital Sana’a in late 2014.
