Cairo: Saudi Arabia today announced extending restrictions, imposed 10 days ago to limit COVID-19 spread, to 20 more days.

These measures continue to halt entertainment activities, close cinemas, indoor entertainment centres, and independent indoor games sites or those in restaurants, and shopping malls as well as gyms and sports facilities for 20 more days that can be extended, a source at the Saudi Interior Ministry said.

Indoor orders at restaurants and coffee shops will continue to be suspended for the same duration, with services of those facilities to be confined to takeaway orders, the source added.

During the extension period, the maximum of gathering on social occasions must not exceed 20 persons.

Ideal control

The extension takes effect as of 10pm today, bringing the length of the restriction duration to 30 days that can be extended according to the epidemiological situation in the country, the source said.

The latest extension has been decided to ensure “ideal control” of the epidemic, curb the upward curve of infections and due to laxity in applying precautionary measures, the source added.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia enforced a temporary ban on flights from 20 countries in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19.
