Cairo: Seven people were killed and five others injured in a multiple car crash on a road linking the Saudi holy city of Medina and Qasim, a local official said.

The crash, which occurred Friday night, involved three cars, spokesman for the Saudi Red Crescent Authority in Medina Khalid Al Sehli added.

Six medical aid and advanced care teams, supported by two ambulatory transport squads, were dispatched to the site where they found seven deaths and five injured persons.

Two children

The fatalities include two children, two women and three men, the official said in media remarks. A child and two women were seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital while two others who sustained minor injuries, he added.

The cause of the mishap is not clear yet. In recent years, Saudi authorities have toughened traffic penalties in an attempt to curb road crashes in the country.
