Cairo: Saudi Arabia has completed a project to revamp the drinking water system in the holy places to serve a huge influx of Muslim pilgrims as part of persistent efforts to moderate searing heat during the performance of the annual Hajj pilgrimage due early next month.

The system provides 2,400 chilled water facilities along pedestrian paths during the Hajj season.

The project was developed by Kidana, the master developer of the Holy Sites in Saudi Arabia, to improve the pilgrims’ experience during the Hajj season and reduce risks of suffering dehydration.

Kidana, the executive arm of the Royal Commission for Mecca City and the Holy Sites, has already installed more than 500 mist fans in Mina, around six kilometres east to the holy city of Mecca.

The installation is part of a project to cool pedestrian paths in Mina, covering an area of more than 35,000 square metres.

Saudi Arabia has implemented a series of measures to beat extreme heat during the Hajj season. They include covering roads with heat-reducing cooling materials, bolstering the misting system and air conditioning of shelters provided for pilgrims.

This year’s Hajj will be the last to take place in summer heat over the next 16 years in Saudi Arabia.
