Cairo: A group of women have launched activities promoting culture and heritage in Saudi Arabia where a high-profile empowerment drive is encouraging females to unleash their potential.

Adopting the name “Aroma”, the team has launched their initiative in Al Majardah Governorate, part of the Asir region in south-western Saudi Arabia. The group was formed after its members won in two contests at an art programme organized by Asir authorities earlier this year.

Asmaa Al Shahri, the team’s supervisor, said the 25-member group comprises female visual artists, photographers, and specialists in artistic designs to present a multitude of cultural activities.

They have opted for a local heritage and tourist village to be their premises because of the cultural implications of the place that combines authenticity and modernization, besides being fitted with all tourist services, Asmaa told the Saudi news agency SPA.

Owner of the heritage village Mohammed Al Ghawi said the place has been rehabilitated over the past 30 years.

The site comprises ancient forts, paths, a residential lodge, a heritage museum, an open theatre, and green spaces. Its area is estimated at 125, 000 square metres, with the village bedecked with decorative and heritage stone carvings.

The aroma of the past fills the air across the place with evocative heritage-themed tools and inspiring designs.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has put a strong emphasis on national identity and heritage, and paid attention to renovation of ancient sites.

In 2020, the kingdom created the Heritage Commission tasked with advancing and preserving the heritage sector. Moreover, the government commission supports efforts to develop national heritage assets, raise awareness and generate interest in them.
