Dubai: Qatar has reported 1,365 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours, raising the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 33,969, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday.

The ministry has announced another 529 new recoveries, taking the total number of patients recovered to 4,899, leaving 29,055 active cases receiving treatment across the country’s hospitals. Meanwhile, no new deaths have been announced, keeping the virus-related death toll in Qatar at 15.

Qatar has been ramping up its efforts to test more people, and has conducted a total of 161,695 coronavirus tests, after 4,125 new tests over the past 24 hours.

A total of 172 COVID-19 patients are now receiving intensive care, after 19 more patients were admitted to the ICU in the past 24 hours.

The first coronavirus case in Qatar was confirmed on February 27, but the number of cases began to rise more steeply from mid-March onwards, beginning with the announcement of 238 new cases in a single day on March 11.

Many of the cases are believed to be from crowded labour accommodations for migrant workers, according to media reports.
