Jebel Shams, also known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia, is part of the Al Hajjar mountain range in the north east of Oman, and is also the highest mountain of the Hajjar range. With year-around cool weather, Jebal Shams is a popular tourist attraction and reccomended by travel and trip portals including Lonely Planet and Trip Advisor for its fantastic views and the salubrious climate throughout the year.

“The weather throughout the summer months is mild and pleasant, while the winter months get very cold. Rains are unpredictable in the mountain ranges and it is not any different here. Last week’s rain was a welcome change for us and it timed perfectly with the weekend,” Says Vipesh, who has been working with Jebel Shams Resort for the past four years.

The waterfalls that were fed by the rain, appeared at various points in the mountain range, making it a picture postcard moment that was snapped by many residents, who promptly shared it on social media. These waterfalls stay for some time and fade away as the rains recede.

Another popular place in the same mountain range is Jebel Akhdar and it also had rains during the weekend. Younus, a resident of Jebel Akhdar, working with a leading resort in the area says: “Jebel Akdar spoils you with its pleasant weather. The temperature right now, at 12 in the afternoon, is 24 degrees Celsius and the mild breeze lingering outside makes it feel even lower. The mountain is green now as this is also the season of pomegranates blooming.”

Jebel Akhdar with its spectacular greenery is also known for rose, pomegranate and walnut farming, and currently pomegranates are in full cry, ready for harvest next month. Walnuts would be ready for harvest in September till October.
