Dubai: Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq of Oman on Wednesday issued a royal decree pardoning 599 prisoners of different nationalities over coronavirus concerns.

The pardoned prisoners, who were convicted of different cases and served various sentences, include 336 expatriate inmates.

The amnesty comes as the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday 48 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections across the country to 419, including 72 recoveries and two deaths.

The ministry reiterated its calls upon the public to adhere to the precautionary measures and home quarantine instructions.

It urged everyone to adhere strictly to social distancing instructions issued by the Supreme Committee as well as to stay at home and not going out unless necessary.

“With our commitment to health instructions, quarantine measures and social distancing, we will prevent ourselves, our families, and our community from the spread of Coronavirus, the ministry said in a statement.
