Abu Dhabi: Two expatriates workers, including a COVID-19 patient from Nepal, and an Indian, have committed suicide by hanging, a security source.

The source added the a Nepalese man, who was receiving treatment for his infection, ended his life by hanging himself with a rope inside one of the bathrooms of the quarantine facility set up at the exhibition grounds in Mishref. An investigation was opened into the incident to determine the reasons, which are still mysterious.

In Al Ahmadi stables, an Indian worker ended his life by hanging for reasons yet to be determined, according to Kuwaiti media.

Every year close to 800,000 people take their own life globally and there are many more people who attempt suicide, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

WHO says every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind.

Suicide occurs throughout the lifespan and was the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds globally in 2016.

WHO says suicide does not just occur in high-income countries, but is a global phenomenon in all regions of the world. Over 79 per cent of global suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries in 2016.
