Cairo: Foreigners have made up 48 per cent of the total offenders arrested in connection with drug cases in Bahrain last month, according to an official report.

The rest are Bahraini nationals, added the report from the kingdom’s Interior Ministry.

Drug offences accounted for 70 per cent of the overall illegal acts exposed last month, the report said, according to Al Watan newspaper.

Twenty-eight per cent of the drug offences were caught at the Bahrain International Airport. Two other per cent of the cases were registered at the King Fahd Causeway that links Bahrain to Saudi Arabia.

Ninety-three of the suspects held over the drug cases were males and the rest were females, according to the figures.

Drug offences could be punished by up to death sentencing in Bahrain.
