It’s not often that one prime minister kneels before another - for whatever reason.

During the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Tirana on May 16, 2025, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama made headlines with a heartfelt gesture towards Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

In a moment that captured the attention of attendees and media alike, Rama knelt before Meloni to present her with a scarf crafted by an Italian designer residing in Albania. He accompanied the gift with a rendition of “Tanti Auguri,” the Italian version of “Happy Birthday,” as Meloni celebrated her 48th birthday.

This act of camaraderie underscored the strong diplomatic ties between Albania and Italy, despite the leaders’ differing political ideologies — Rama leads Albania’s Socialist Party, while Meloni heads Italy’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party. Their collaboration has extended to significant agreements, including a controversial plan to process some migrants rescued at sea by Italy in Albanian detention centres, although this plan faces legal challenges.

The EPC summit in Tirana marked a significant moment for Albania, as it was the first time the summit was held in the Western Balkans, highlighting the region’s growing importance in European political dialogue. Rama’s gesture not only celebrated a personal milestone for Meloni but also symbolised the deepening relationship between the two nations.
