London: British police say they've arrested a serving officer over allegations the country's media bribed police for information.

London police said Wednesday that the 52-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was arrested in the early morning on suspicion of corruption and misconduct in a public office.

The woman - the first serving police officer to be arrested in the inquiry - was detained at a house in Essex, in southeastern England, and is being questioned at a local police station.

Eight arrests so far

Eight people, including a reporter working for The Sun tabloid, have so far been arrested in the inquiry into police bribery.

The investigation is linked to inquiries into tabloid phone hacking, and into allegations reporters hacked computers.
