Morning mocha: Your new meal in a cup

Morning mocha: Your new meal in a cup

London: Women who pick up a coffee on their way to work could be consuming almost a third of their recommended daily calories in one go, a report warned on Friday.

Increasingly sophisticated coffees and larger cups mean chains are regularly selling drinks that contain well over 500 calories each. Starbucks is named as the worst offender in the report published by Which?, the consumer group, which surveyed the leading coffee chains and 18 independent cafes around Britain.

It is the milk in the coffee, with its high fat content, that has alarmed nutritionists. A Starbucks' large white chocolate mocha with "whip" made with whole milk has 628 calories - nearly a third of the recommended daily amount for women, and a quarter of the amount for men. Its large caffe latte comes in at 341 calories and contains 11.2 grams of saturated fat - more than half the 20-gram daily maximum recommendation. Some of its hot chocolates contain over 19 grams of saturated fat.

A medium-sized mocha with whipped cream made with semi-skimmed milk has 326 calories, while a medium cup of mocha flake made with whole milk, cream and flake from Costa Coffee has 297 calories. Lesley McLauchlan, a nutrionist from London, said: "I don't think most people have a clue how many calories they contain."
