3 people were seriously injured and now remain in a stable condition at the hospital
Dubai: A double-decker bus crashed into a canal bridge, ripping the roof off and injuring 20 people in Salford, Greater Manchester, on Monday, July 21.
Three people were seriously injured after the bus struck the Bridgewater Canal Aqueduct on Barton Lane in Eccles. The 55-year-old bus driver was then arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving.
The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said a 19-year-old woman, and two men -- one in their 20s and another in his 40s, have sustained serious injuries and remain in a stable condition in the hospital.
According to the police, 12 people were treated at the scene for their injuries, and five others had injuries which fortunately didn’t require treatment.
An immediate and urgent investigation has been launched, which also includes investigating why the 100 service bus did not take the usual route.
In an interview with BBC Radio Manchester, Labour MP for Worsley and Eccles Michael Wheeler said, “It’s not the first time this has happened, so after understanding what’s happened we need to do everything we can to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Prior to this accident, another bus had its roof ripped off after it struck the same bridge in April 2023.
