An 82-year-old grandmother died for just £2.20 (Dh12) after three thugs attacked her in a historic market town
London: An 82-year-old grandmother died for just £2.20 (Dh12) after three thugs attacked her in a historic market town.
Eunice Gale was shoved to the ground and her handbag was violently wrenched from her arm. The men fled with the handful of change.
Gale, a charity fundraiser who was ‘100 per cent fit' before the attack in Melbourne, Derbyshire, suffered a broken pelvis and heavy bruising.
She was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital, where she contracted an infection and died seven weeks later.
Last night her son Neil blamed the attack for her death a week ago and condemned the ‘appalling' state of a society in which an elderly woman can die for £2.20.
Gale, who runs a repair garage in Melbourne, said: "Whatever injuries she received, she would have never been in hospital and caught an infection if it wasn't for the robbery. This has hastened her death. She was in a lot of pain and she was angry that she was "in prison" in hospital while the robbers were free to drink beer with her money.
"When they recovered my mother's bag, everything was there apart from £2.20, which was all she had. There is only one answer in my mind capital punishment.
"Things like this will continue to happen unless we get some sort of punishment that fits the crime."
