The plane was carrying 175 passengers and 6 crew members to Muan International Airport
A Jeju Air Boeing 737-8AS crashed on landing at Muan International Airport in South Korea, killing at least 151 people and injuring two survivors, the fire agency confirmed.
Dramatic footage showed the plane emitting smoke before being engulfed in flames.
The footage shows a twin-engine plane crash into a wall and erupt in flames after skidding off a runway. The plane appears to have attempted a belly landing with its landing gear retracted. Preliminary reports suggest bird strikes may have caused the landing gear to malfunction, leading to the crash. Black smoke quickly filled the sky as the aircraft burned.
The incident marks Jeju Air's first fatal accident since its establishment in 2005. Emergency services deployed 32 fire engines and numerous firefighters to the scene.
Located 288 km southwest of Seoul, Muan Airport witnessed the tragic crash amid South Korea's strong aviation safety record, despite occasional incidents like the 2022 Asiana Airlines emergency exit mishap.
