Torrential rains brought life to a standstill in the Philippine capital, as floodwaters inundated neighbourhoods and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. Authorities confirmed that at least two people are missing, while search and rescue operations continue across the hardest-hit areas.

The heavy overnight downpour caused the Marikina River to overflow, submerging nearby communities and prompting emergency alerts. In response, schools and government offices in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces were closed to ensure public safety.

Displaced families have sought refuge in temporary shelters as local disaster response teams coordinate relief efforts. Officials warn that more rain may follow, urging residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant.

The government has mobilised rescue units and relief supplies. Still, the scale of the flooding underscores the capital’s vulnerability to extreme weather events, which are becoming increasingly frequent due to climate change.
