Manila: The American embassy in Manila has warned US citizens about the threat of kidnappings in Central Visayas, Philippines, particularly in areas frequented by tourists.

The embassy said it had received “unsubstantiated, yet credible, information that terrorist groups may attempt to conduct kidnappings in Central Visayas, which includes both Cebu and Bohol provinces.”

“US citizens are advised to carefully consider this information as you make your travel plans, and to review personal security plans, avoid large crowds and gatherings, and remain vigilant at all times,” the embassy said.

According to Philippine government figures, at least 122,613 local and foreign travellers visited Cebu in January 2017 alone.

Most tourists in Cebu also visit Bohol, which is just two hours away by ferry.

Travellers can also fly there from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila.

It is believed that a large number of these travellers are Americans.

Americans accounted for the second highest per capita tourist spending after Koreans, using up some P3.69 billion (Dh273 million) in their Philippine travels for just the month of January.

It is expected that the travel warning will have an effect on American tourist arrivals to the areas mentioned.

“The US embassy wishes to remind US citizens of the most recent Worldwide Caution, dated March 7, 2017, which indicates there is an ongoing threat of terrorist actions and violence against US citizens and interests abroad, including the Philippines,” the embassy warning said.

Among the places and occasions that the embassy advised Americans to avoid are sporting events, theatres, markets, mass transport including airlines, and areas where crowds gathers.

“US citizens should be mindful of the importance of taking preventive measures to ensure their safety and security while travelling and residing in the Philippines,” the warning said.

The US Embassy occasionally issues warning to its citizens on threats to their security. Several months ago, the mission warned Americans of threats kidnapping or other acts of terrorism in Central Mindanao as well as in Western Mindanao, particularly Sulu and Basilan.
