Manila: A speedboat owned by Aga Muhlach exploded while the Filipino actor was on a holiday with his family in the resort island of Caramoan Saturday, reports reaching the Philippine capital said.

Muhlach and his family were reported safe as they were not aboard the watercraft when it exploded, but the boat’s unnamed pilot sustained serious injuries.

The Bombo Radyo’s Naga, Camarines Sur station quoted Philippine Coast Guard sources as saying that the incident took place several metres away from Gota Beach in Caramoan around 6am Saturday in the village of Paniman.

Reports said police are conducting an investigation into the incident which took place as the actor, who is in his mid-40s, is running for a congressional seat representing the fourth district of Camarines Sur in the May.

Muhlach, who started out in teen films during the 1980s, currently hosts an adventure series for a local television network. He starred in drama films including the 2005 Philippine box office hit, Dubai, which was shot on location in the Emirate.

Dubai is a story about two brothers, one of which is played by Muhlach and the other by John Lloyd Cruz, who tried to find love and fortune as overseas Filipino workers.

The blast in Caramoan involving Mulach took place as the 45-day campaign period for local candidates running in the May 11 mid-term elections started.

A total 233 elective seats will be up for grabs in the House of Representatives 80 each for governors and vice governors; 766 for provincial board member; 143 each for city mayor and city vice mayor; 1,598 for city councillor; 1,491 each for municipal mayor and municipal vice mayor; and 11,932 for municipal councillor.
