Islamabad:

The Pakistani Intelligence Bureau (IB) says it has arrested the chief of a death squad of the country’s dreaded sectarian terrorist outfit Lashkar e Jhangvi (LJ).

According to domestic private Geo television channel the IB informed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during a briefing on Friday, identifying the terrorist as Masoom Billah.

The report did not give details about where and when the man was arrested, but said he was arrested after prolonged surveillance. The IB told the premier that Billa has provided significant information regarding recent attack on a high court judge in the violence-plagued port city of Karachi.

The banned LJ had owned most sectarian attacks in the country including killing of hundreds of Shia Muslims from the Hazara community in bombing in south-western Balochistan province.

There is widespread concern in the country over the recurring sectarian bloodletting and the international community has called upon the government in Pakistan to control the violence against the minority community.

Pakistan’s new government says it is working to evolve a national security police in consultation with political parties in order to deal with the menace of terrorism and religious extremism.
