Karachi: A three-storey building, inhabited by three families, collapsed here at Jaffar e Tayyar Society in Malir area on Monday morning.

The roof of the top floor of the 30-year-old structure caved in leading to the collapse of the entire structure at around 7:30am.

Residents in the neighbourhood rescued about 10 to 12 people trapped in the rubble. Soon they were joined by police and Pakistan Rangers personnel along with rescue teams of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and volunteers of Edhi service. The incident occurred in a populated area, with houses built on 120 yards plots.

No other building adjacent to the collapsed structure was affected, said a KMC official.

He, however, agreed that a proper assessment on the structural integrity of surrounding buildings have to be carried out. “We will undertake this once we are done with our rescue work,” he said.
