Karachi: The Sindh government has carried out development work in the historical old city area of Karachi where “Wazir Mansion”, the birthplace of Founder of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah, is situated to save the area from flooding during monsoon.

Wazir Mansion is situated in Kharadar area, which is a part of the old city area where drainage and sewerage systems became outdated and obsolete causing inundation of the locality whenever heavy monsoon rain occurs. The area becomes inaccessible after heavy rains as special machinery has to be deployed by the city’s administration to clear flooding. During these days, visitors are kept out of Wazir Mansion the Founder of the Nation was born in 1876 and spent the early years of his life.

Member of Sindh Assembly (MPA), belonging to Pakistan Peoples’ Party, Sharmila Farooqi, who earlier also served as the Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Culture, took personal interest in carrying out development work in Wazir Mansion area.

Farooqi said that she had requested the Sindh government three years ago to carry out development work in Wazir Mansion area. She said the development works in the area would be formally completed by 25th December this year - the birthday of Quaid-e-Azam.

During a recent visit to the area, the MPA was briefed by the officials of the Karachi Development Authority and other civic agencies about the work to save the neighbourhood from flooding during monsoon due to revamping of the drainage system. The MPA was also briefed about the other work being done in the area for its beautification that would be completed in a few weeks.

The PPP legislator said that Wazir Mansion was visited by a large number of local and foreign tourists every year.

She said the heritage site had to be properly protected to pay homage to the services of Jinnah and that all such cultural assets in the country should be preserved in the same manner.

Sindh CM’s Advisor on Law and Environment, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, also inspected the development works being completed in Kharadar area to protect the site of Wazir Mansion.
