ISLAMABAD: The president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Shahbaz Sharif, in a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary of Punjab, Saturday conveyed his concerns over the provincial government’s plan to remove air conditioner and TV from his brother’s cell in Kot Lakhpat Jail of Lahore.

Shahbaz has warned that removing air conditioner from Nawaz Sharif’s cell would be a clear disregard of the recommendations by the medical board constituted by the Punjab government to examine his Sharif’s health.

In his letter, Sharif has referred to a correspondence by the Punjab Government to Inspector General Prisons dated July 17 in which the provincial government asked him to remove the air conditioner, as per the orders of the prime minister. “I want to draw your attention towards the recommendations of the medical board formulated by the Government of Punjab,” writes the former chief minister of the province.

According to Shahbaz, the most significant recommendation of the medical board was to keep Sharif in a room with appropriate temperature. “In its report, the board stated that failing to do so can cause severe impact on his kidneys,” Shahbaz warned in his letter.

He also expressed his displeasure regarding the “cold-blooded” attitude of Interior Ministry, for ignoring such vital point regarding Sharif’s health.

“Such act of political victimisation is an attack on the life of my leader and elder brother,” the PML-N president wrote.

Removing the air conditioner from Sharif’s cell is a blatant violation of the recommendations issued by the medical board, he said, adding that these recommendations must be implemented in their true spirit.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the chief justice of Pakistan, Lahore High Court chief justice, Punjab additional chief secretary and IG Prisons.

Earlier, immediately after arrival of Prime Minister Imran Khan from the US, the Punjab government on Thursday had directed IG prisons to remove air conditioner from the room of the former prime minister.

Punjab home department had written a letter to IG prisons in which it has been said that no accused will be given any facility without the permission of the prime minister and also no concession will be given to those who are imprisoned in money laundering charges.

Imran khan, during his address in Capital One Arena in Washington last Tuesday, had said that he would withdraw all facilities including AC and TV in jail from Nawaz Sharif after returning to country.
