Emergency response teams, including military units, are working around the clock
The death toll from relentless monsoon rains that have caused devastating flash floods and landslides across northern Pakistan has climbed to at least 164, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported on Friday.
The heaviest toll was recorded in the mountainous Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where 150 people have lost their lives in the last 24 hours alone due to landslides, collapsing homes, and sudden floods. Rescue operations remain ongoing in several remote villages cut off by damaged roads and rising waters. In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, authorities confirmed nine deaths, while five more casualties were reported in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region, where swollen rivers and steep terrain have complicated relief efforts.
Emergency response teams, including military units, are working around the clock to reach isolated communities and evacuate survivors. The NDMA warned that the situation could worsen with more rain forecast over the coming days.
“Our teams are prioritising search and rescue, along with the delivery of essential aid,” an NDMA spokesperson said. “But continued rainfall and blocked access routes are challenging relief operations.”
Videos shared on social media show torrential water sweeping through towns, destroying homes, bridges, and infrastructure. Thousands have been displaced, and temporary shelters have been set up in schools and community centres.
