Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, has ordered the police to withdraw a criminal case it registered against those who staged a protest when Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, visited Sukkur city in the province last week to meet people affected by heavy monsoon rains and floods.

He said the government and police authorities must treat the victims of the natural calamity with love, affection, and respect.

Shah said that it was simply intolerable for him to lodge criminal cases against the community at the time of acute hardship.

The spokesman for the CM said that some flood victims had come in front of the vehicle of the PM when he was visiting Sukkur along with Shah and started protesting.

The Sukkur police lodged the case against the protesters under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code that deal with the incidents of rioting, unlawful assembly, deterring any public servant from the discharge of his duties, unlawful restraint of any person and hatching a criminal conspiracy to commit an offence.

The police said that it had lodged the case after a group of protesters had disturbed the law and order situation by blocking the road when the PM was visiting a relief camp for the flood victims.

The police alleged that the protesters had resorted to violence during the prtest as they damaged the vehicles and also blocked the traffic.

The protesters told media persons that they had assembled just to convey to the PM that the basic necessities of life had not been given to them at the relief camps while the local municipal authorities had not been taking the emergency steps to ensure flood waters were drained out.

Later, the Sukkur SITE area police station submitted an application to the relevant court to quash the criminal case against the protesters.
