Karachi: Unknown gunmen riding on a motorcycle shot a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) legislator and his son while both were coming out of a mosque after offering their Friday noon prayers, police said.

The party announced a three-day mourning and strike on Saturday to condemn the assassination of its member of parliament.

Another passerby, who came under firing range also died.

Sajid Qureshi, who was elected member of provincial assembly of Sindh in last month elections, was coming out of Al Huda Mosque along with his two sons when the attackers targeted him. Waqas Quresh, one of his sons tried to protect him and was also shot.

Qureshi died on the spot whereas his son passed away while being taken to the hospital. The passerby also died because of excessive bleeding.

After the killings of Qureshi and his sons, many parts of the city got tensed and shops, petrol and CNG stations were closed.

In Hyderabad city, the businesses were closed soon after the murder of Qureshi as the tension gripped the city, another stronghold of MQM besides Karachi.

MQM also announced three-day mourning of Qureshi assassination and appealed the transports and business closed on Saturday.

Examinations at Karachi University on Friday evening were postponed whereas the university also announced deferring the examinations that were scheduled on Saturday.

Unknown men also threw a hand grenade on a petrol pump that left four men including a policeman injured.

At least three of MQM legislators have been killed so far in the continuous spate of violence going on for several years.

MQM boycotted the national assembly session in Islamabad to condemn the killing of Qureshi.

Rashid Godial, the MQM member of national assembly talking to press outside the parliament said that his party workers and leaders were being targeted and the government was taking no measures to stop the killings. He said that since the elections more than 100 of the MQM workers were killed.

In different incidents of shooting at least seven more people were killed in various parts of the city. Unknown killers shot Maulana Yasir Jan in Shah Faisal Colony whereas another man was gunned down in Eidgah area.

In Keamri town a bullet ridden body of a trader was found in his car whereas four more bodies were recovered from Lyari, Ibrahim Hyderi, and Sher Shah towns.

Till late Thursday night 15 people were killed.
