Karachi: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday ordered the police to attach property and freeze the bank accounts of the absconding murderers of 20-year-old Shahzeb Khan.

The court also ordered the police chief to arrest the absconding killers withing 24 hours.

Khan was allegedly shot dead by Shahrukh Jatoi and Siraj Talpur after some petty arguments and quarrel.

Iftikhar Mohammad Chahudhry, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, himself has taken charge of the murder as no report was filed by the police. Members of the civil society and political parties staged protests seeking justice for the victim.

The chief justice expressed his anger over the absence of inspector general (IG) of the Sindh province, who did not attend the court, held in Islamabad.

One of the IG’s deputy told the court that the IG could not attend court because he was busy taking care of security affairs in Karachi on Thursday because of Shiite processions.

Justice Gulzar Ahmad rejected the lame excuse made by the deputy police chief saying that it showed their sheer laxity in the case.

The SC chief also expressed his anger over not including Sikaner Jatoi, the father of the prime murder suspect, in the police interrogation. Jatoi has been a member of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and very close to the senior party leaders, it is said.

A police spokesman said a team has been dispatched to Islamabad to apprehend the murderers. However, he did give details.

Sikaner Jatoi was shown on a local television channel saying that his son had gone Australia on a scheduled visit a day after the murder and claimed that his son was not involved in the murder.

The court has fixed January 7 as the next hearing date.
