Karachi: Parveen Rind, a nursing house officer associated with the People’s University of Medical & Health Science for Women in Nawabshah, reached the premises of Sindh High Court (SHC) in Karachi barefooted to seek justice on account of being a victim of harassment and a ‘life-threatening’ situation on campus.

The Chief Justice of SHC took cognizance of the case of Rind and summoned the relevant senior police, district administration, and university officials to seek reports about the progress made by them.

While talking to media persons at the court’s premises, Rind narrated her ordeal saying that she did not get any help from the relevant officials despite emphatically pleading her case.

The Women Medical University’s House Officer said that earlier she had tried to seek help from Sindh Health Minister after she had been harassed and her life was endangered but to no avail.

Rind said that she wanted to continue her studies, and for this purpose she wanted to get the guarantee for her safety and security and as an option she could be transferred to any other medical university in Sindh where she could complete the rest of her house-surgeonship without any threat or harassment.

She expressed her resolve to support all the female students on the campuses in Sindh who had been striving hard to seek justice in their cases related to harassment and threats.

While appearing before the SHC, the Deputy Inspector General of Shaheed Benazirabad Division (where Nawabshah District is situated) briefed the court about the efforts so far made by the area police to resolve Rind’s case.

Opposition rally

The Opposition legislators in Sindh Assembly took out a protest rally from the assembly’s building and held a demonstration outside the Chief Minister House after they were denied the opportunity to table a resolution in the house against the recurring instances of harassment of female students in the educational institutions of the province. They pasted a large-sized copy of their open letter, near the main gate of CM House, on the issue of harassment on the campuses.
