Thiruvananthapuram: Days after the Kerala police’s social media page crossed a million likes for a landmark achievement, it has another breakthrough to celebrate.

Following leads using the latest technology available, the state police force has been able to nab the truck driver who is believed to have run over a bike on which two brothers from Alappuzha district – both of them chefs in leading hotels – from neighbouring Tamil Nadu state.

The siblings, Ajesh Dasan, 37 and Aneesh Dasan, 35, natives of Cherthala in Alappuzha district, were rushed to hospital but lost their lives and there was no trace of the vehicle that hit them.

Ever since the incident that happened in the early hours of January 10, police had been analysing digital leads to trace the vehicle that hit the bike, and on Friday they caught up with the accused truck driver, identified as Ramesan, 45 from Coimbatore.

Police said the truck was going from Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu to Valavanadu near Cherthala when the incident occurred. Ramesan reportedly told police that after the accident he stopped the truck briefly, and finding no one at the site, carried on driving.

However, camera records showed that after the incident the truck did not continue along the national highway and instead turned into a pocket road and reached the Saktheeswaram junction. The truck then came back to the national highway and proceeded to Valavanadu.

Police could crack the case after inspecting closed circuit camera visuals at different places in Kerala. Police had also collected bits of paint that had dropped from the truck on its impact with the bike. One key evidence was a camera visual showing the truck and bike travelling close to each other. Another visual seen after the incident showed the truck with some paint scraped off the front.

The truck was seized by police from Triuchirapalli where it had been given for repainting. Police informed the truck owner who is based in Tiruchirapalli about the incident and took Ramesan into custody. Ramesan had not informed the truck owner about the incident, which occurred at Pattanakkad near the Bishop Moor School on the national highway.

Ajesh leaves behind his wife and a daughter, and Aneesh is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Meanwhile, in a bike mishap at Balaramapuram in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, two college students lost their lives. The deceased were identified as Sujin Sudarsan, 23 and Aswin Murukan, 19. The bike veered off the road and hit a roadside post, leading to their deaths.
