Eight people, including a groom and two children, were killed and two others injured after the SUV they were travelling in crashed into the boundary wall of Janata Inter College in Jewanai, Sambhal district, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Friday, according to a PTI report.

The victims were part of a wedding procession en route from Har Govindpur village to Sirtoul in Budaun. Four of the deceased have been identified as groom Suraj (24), his sister-in-law Asha (26), her two-year-old daughter Aishwarya, and six-year-old Vishnu, son of Manoj. Four persons remain unidentified.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police (South) Anukriti Sharma, the vehicle lost control at high speed before colliding with the wall. “Upon receiving information, rescue operations were immediately launched,” she said.

All eightvictims were declared dead at the Jewanai Community Health Centre. Two others, critically injured, were referred to a hospital in Aligarh.

Eyewitnesses claimed the SUV was overspeeding at the time of the crash.

PMO announces ex-gratia

The Prime Minister’s Office extended condolences via social media platform X, announcing an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured, under the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). An investigation is underway.
