Thiruvananthapuram: The joy of getting their first jobs was short-lived for two youngsters in Kerala who were killed within hours of tasting success in their job interviews on Tuesday. Shortly after successfully attending a job fair, the two were killed in a mishap when their bike hit another bike on their return journey.

The youth, identified as Ambadi Jayan, 20 and B. Abhiraj, alias Sachin, 19 lost their lives when the bike they were riding collided with another bike near Chengannur. Two men on the other bike suffered injuries.

Reports said the accident occurred when the bike on which Jayan and Abhiraj were travelling was overtaking another vehicle and their bike’s handle hit the handle of the bike coming in the opposite direction.

The deceased youth had both passed from the Government Industrial Training Institute, Chengannur last year. Jayan has two siblings and Abhiraj has a brother.

Kerala’s road deaths have been consistently high, topping 4,000 deaths per year since 2011. In 2018, the road deaths added up to 4,303, the highest ever in a year.

In another road mishap early on Tuesday morning, four pedestrians lost their lives in Thrissur district when a car went off the road into the pavement. The deceased were identified as K. Babu, 54, his son Bibin, 29, their neighbour P. Subran, 58 and his daughter Prajitha, 23.

The deceased were walking home after attending a festival at the Thumbur Ayyappankavu temple.

The car driver refused to stop after the mishap, but local residents followed the vehicle and stopped it some distance away. Police said the occupants of the car were drunk, and that a case was registered against Maliekal Agnes, 21 who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

In another road accident, a youth, Kuruvilla Thomas, 24 lost his life in Kottayam when a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus hit his bike. Police said the mishap occurred when the bus was trying to overtake another vehicle.
