Candidates aged 68, 67 and 60 among two dozen over 35 years who applied for medical seats
Chennai: In a remarkable demonstration that age is no obstacle to ambition, three senior citizens from Tamil Nadu aged 68, 67, and 60 have successfully cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2025 and applied for MBBS admissions under the state’s 7.5% government school quota.
According to multiple reports, including The Hindustan Times and Moneycontrol, the trio includes two practising lawyers and one other candidate who studied in government schools. Their applications have sparked both celebration and administrative debate, with officials confirming it is the first time such senior applicants have emerged in Tamil Nadu’s medical admissions process.
“There is no upper age limit for NEET candidates as per National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines,” a health department official was quoted as saying by The Times of India. “They are eligible to apply and have followed due process.”
The NMC removed the upper age limit for NEET aspirants in 2022, allowing people of all ages to appear for the exam. This move has opened the door for a diverse range of candidates — including retirees and professionals — who now view medicine as a second career.
The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Medical Education confirmed that at least 25 candidates over the age of 35 applied for MBBS seats this year, the highest number recorded since NEET became mandatory in 2017. Among them, the three senior-most candidates stood out, not only for their age but also for their resolve to pursue a demanding medical degree.
The trio is seeking admission through the 7.5% reservation quota for students who completed their schooling in government institutions, a policy introduced to promote equitable access to medical education. Reports said their applications are being processed, though some technical challenges remain — particularly in verifying older academic documents.
Officials are now evaluating the implications of admitting senior students into the rigorous MBBS programme, which includes long hospital shifts and intensive practical training. However, since there are no legal restrictions, their applications will be considered on par with other eligible candidates.
The story has gained widespread attention on social media, with many lauding the seniors’ determination and lifelong learning spirit. On X (formerly Twitter), the hashtag #NeverTooLate trended briefly in Tamil Nadu.
