It had been forcibly shut down by Youth Congress activists
Mumbai: Dr Subramanian Swamy, President, Janata Party, will visit central Mumbai’s Aditi Restaurant that had to be forcibly shut down by Youth Congress activists for carrying an anti-UPA government footnote in its bill.
A party leader said Swamy’s visit on Saturday is a symbolic one to express his solidarity with hotelier Srinivas Shetty who had printed on the hotel’s cash memo bill: “As per UPA government, eating money (2G, Coal, CWG scam) is a necessity and eating food in an AC restaurant is a luxury.”
Jagdish Shetty, National General Secretary, Janata Party, told Gulf News that though the UPA government was involved in one scam after another that involved billions of rupees, the common man was burdened with taxes. The eatery had printed the statement after service tax was introduced for restaurants with air conditioners.
“This visit will also express his solidarity with the anger and resentment felt by the common man against corruption in the UPA government.”
Following the incident, Swamy had tweeted: “All that Srinvas Shetty of Aditi said was if eating national assets is essential why eating in a restaurant is luxury?”
According to the Janata Party member, local Youth Congress workers had not seen the footnote until it was brought to their notice by the Delhi-based Youth Congress which asked them to lead a protest over it.
Swamy, in the last few years has been in the forefront in exposing various scams of the central government. He was elected as Janata Party candidate from Mumbai to the Lok Sabha in 1977 and 1980 and represented Mumbai North East constituency comprising the suburbs of Chembur, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund.
